Street gangs have been active in Yakima since the late 1980's. The Hispanic gangs Surenos and Nortenos are most dominant in the city. Them and the West Side Hustlaz control a large amount of the area drug trade. These gangs are very violent and have been blamed for many of Yakima's violent crimes. Also in the city are a handfull of Brown Pride, Black and female gangs.

Gang territory: The Surenos gangs strong hold is in north-west Yakima. This area is north of W. Lincoln Avenue, between N. 3rd Avenue to N. 16th Avenue. Surenos gang members are not limited to this area only though. I have found Surenos gang members living in all parts of Yakima from West Valley to East Yakima and in the city of Union Gap.

The Nortenos gangs strong hold is in north-east Yakima. This area is north of E. Nob Hill Boulevard, between 1st Street to Interstate 82. Most Nortenos gangs stick to this area, but I have found some Norteno gang activity in South Yakima around S. 3rd Avenue and in the city of Union Gap
