Pierce County (population 805,400) is located 30 miles south of Seattle. Street gangs have been active in this area since the mid-1980's. Just like in the cities of Seattle and Portland, many of the original gangs were started here by gang members from Los Angeles, CA after they came here to sell cocaine and other drugs for a higher profit than they were making back in LA. Today though, most of the gangs are local and have no true connection to Los Angeles.
Gang members in Pierce County come from all racial backgrounds and lifestyles. The most predominant are the Black gangs that fall under the Crips, Bloods and Gangster Disciple Folks. Hispanic gangs are becoming very active, especially with tagging graffiti. The majority of the graffiti I find in Pierce County is done at the hands of Hispanic gangs. Also putting in work on the streets are Asian, Native American and White gang members.
